Barbour at Henri Beene

A high percentage of men and women would have in their mind the brand Barbour when the words Wax Jacket are used.
This illustrates how a type of product and a brand name can become linked together and be seen as one. This has not been a short Journey for Barbour or the Barbour jacket, it started back in 1894. Initially built on the demand of the local sailors and fishermen, they needed to stay dry. This protection was provided by the fabric oil skin a further development of the use of oiled sail cloth from 1795 a fore runner to wax coats.

Throughout their History Barbour jackets have provided clothing that answered a requirement. One of the best examples of this is known as the Barbour International Jacket. A design for use by Motorcycle Riders with the top pocket being placed on a slant to allow maps to be accessed. During the 1964 International six days trials this Barbour Jacket was worn by the American team which included style icon Steve Mc Queen. Retrieved from the Barbour jacket archives for the autumn winter 2010 Barbour clothing collection is the Barbour Ursula jacket. The Barbour Ursula jacket had its design based on an original Barbour jacket for the motorcycle an all in one suit, eventually being split to become a two piece suit a Barbour jacket and trouser. The Barbour Ursula jacket gained its name from a U-class Royal Navy submarine - Ursula. The crew of the submarine were well aware of the benefits that a Barbour jacket with wax properties gave in terms of protection against the elements as many of the crew were motorcyclists and found the Barbour jacket ideal for motorcyclists in bad weather. Submarine Commander Captain George Philips progressed the idea of using the Barbour jacket motorcycle suit for his crew during World War Two, Barbour at the time were producing weather proof clothing for the military so the transition from Barbour jacket to Barbour submarine suit was all the more feasible. History shows how this transition of the Barbour motorcycle jacket benefited the submarine crews in terms of protection and enabled them to continue operations during the worst Atlantic weather As Barbour have access to the Ministry of defence - MOD -1940 patent archive details for the Barbour Ursula jacket the Barbour Ursula jacket benefits from archive original detail in its production. The details are carefully replicated in term of pocket placement and collar detail, the original Barbour Ursula Jacket allowed for a hood to be used or removed if desired. A part of the Barbour jacket Heritage, the Barbour Ursula Jacket.

Part of the Barbour Jacket and Barbour Clothing Collection is the Barbour Bag range. Without doubt the current fashion trends have the Barbour jacket and Barbour Quilted Jacket as on trend styles. The trend for fashion accesories has seen the Barbour Bags fall within this category. Partly sought for its fashion reference and partly for their quality and design the Barbour Bag has become a fashion required style.
The Barbour Bag Tarras is based on the traditional field sports bag with a webbing shoulder strap and front fasteners. Inside two press stud pouch pockets offer additional storage to the main single compartment, the outer finish of the Barbour Bag Tarras is made of the same fabric as the Barbour Jacket International in Wax Cotton. The Barbour Bag Tarras is also available as a Leather option with the same internal pocket details.
Adapted from the traditional bags the Barbour Mail Bag and the Barbour Briefcase offer practical use with fashion influences. The Barbour Mail Bag follows fashion trend for a multi use bag which retains the heritage of Barbour, a secure zip compartment and a single leather buckle fastening flap reveal a single compartment lined with the Barbour Tartan lining. The use of the Barbour Jacket Wax Cotton is also used on the Barbour Bag Mail style.
The move of Barbour from that of a Country brand to that of a lifestyle brand is illustrated with the Barbour Bag style Barbour Briefcase combination of heritage and requirement. Less formal than the traditional work briefcase the Barbour Briefcase bag incorporates a multi use work bag with internal dividers and zip compartments, leather trim detail and the use of the classic Barbour Jacket Wax Cotton. The Barbour Bag Collection a new extension of classic Barbour.

The Barbour nylon international jacket. 2011 will be a landmark year for Barbour in that the Barbour jacket of motorcycle origin will be 75 years of age. Original Barbour motorcycle jackets diverted the use of wax cotton from the already established country jackets to offer the riders protection from the elements with an optional full protective suit. This suit evolved to the production of a full nylon suit during the 1970's. The celebration of 75 years on the bike in 2011 will see the classic motorcycle Barbour international nylon jacket reintroduced. The design and style of this archive piece retains the original details of the Barbour nylon international jacket, which include the classic four pocket detail with one top pocket slanted for easier access whilst riding, the classic belt detail and the visually distinctive brass press studs all of which make the Barbour nylon international jacket so recognisable. Aside from the the style details that put together make this an iconic piece of apparel the most visual detail of the new version of the Barbour nylon international jacket will be the colour options offered. The original colours offered in the 1970's included bright reds and blues the new version will follow the this same colour pallette with the Barbour nylon international jacket in black nylon blue nylon yellow nylon and green nylon. This is a true celebration of the iconic Barbour A7 jacket.
